Anand Dighe was a senior leader of Shiv Sena in India. He was born on January 27, 1951, and passed away on August 26, 2001. He was popularly known as Dharmaveer and was the Thane district unit chief of Shiv Sena. Dighe mentored several young politicians from the Thane region, including Eknath Shinde and Rajan Vichare. He joined politics at a young age and became the president of Shiv Sena’s Thane unit in 1984. Dighe was a grassroots leader with a large fan base and was considered a powerful muscleman in Thane. He used to hold a daily Durbar at his Tembhi Naka residence to hear and resolve issues faced by Thane citizens along with Shiv Sena party workers.
Dighe was accused of the murder of Shiv Sena party member Sridhar Khopkar, who had allegedly voted for Congress in 1989. He was arrested under TADA and was out on bail. The case continued until his death. In August 2001, Dighe was admitted to the hospital after a car accident and suffered minor injuries on his leg. During his treatment, the hospital management announced that Dighe died of a heart attack. His followers believed that he died due to medical negligence, and as a result, they burned down the Sunitadevi Singhania Hospital in Thane where he died. In 2019, Nilesh Rane made some statements related to Anand Dighe’s death, but senior politician Narayan Rane, who was the last person to meet Dighe before his death, disowned these statements. Narayan Rane stated that Dighe did not die because someone killed him and that his condition was serious when he visited him at the hospital. He further explained that he had called Bal Thackeray and asked him to send Dr Nitu Mandke, a renowned cardiologist, to treat Dighe. However, before Dr Nitu Mandke could reach the hospital, Dighe had passed away. Therefore, Narayan Rane denied any allegations of foul play in Anand Dighe’s death.
