Dinesh Karthik Career
In October 2004, Karthik replaced Parthiv Patel in the fourth Test between Australia and India in Mumbai and made his Test cricket debut, scoring 14 runs in two innings and taking two catches. He was then selected for a two-Test home series against South Africa, where he scored only one run in the first Test in Kanpur but managed to score 46 runs in the second Test at Kolkata to help India win the match. In December 2004, Karthik played in India’s two-Test tour of Bangladesh, where he scored only 25 and 11, despite India winning both matches by an innings. He was retained for the three-Test series at home against Pakistan in March, where he scored six runs in the first Test in Mohali and 28 runs in the second Test at Kolkata. India won the second Test by 196 runs.
In the next match, Karthik made only 10 and nine as India collapsed and lost ten wickets on the final day of an otherwise high-scoring match. He was then replaced by Dhoni for the three Tests at home against Sri Lanka. After Dhoni was injured, Karthik replaced him for the third Test at Newlands against South Africa, where he scored 63 and an unbeaten 38, and his wicket-keeping was praised. Karthik did not play any matches at the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, but was selected as a specialist opener for a tour of Bangladesh, where he scored 56 and 22 in the first Test and his maiden Test century in the second Test, making 129 runs.
Karthik was a regular opener in the mid-2007 Test series in England, where he scored three half-centuries, making 263 runs at 43.83, and was the highest scorer in the series for India, who won their first series in England in 21 years. In late 2008, Karthik played against Pakistan at home but had a lean Test series, managing only 39 runs in two innings of the first two Tests, exceeding single figures only once. However, he scored 24 and 52 in the third Test in Bangalore and kept the wickets due to Dhoni’s injury. Karthik was then selected for the Test tour of Australia as an opener, but he did not play in the first two Tests.
