After her marriage to Amitabh Bachchan and the birth of their children, she limited her work in films, but starred in Nauker (1979) and Silsila (1981). She returned to acting after a 17-year break with Govind Nihalani’s Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998). Since then, she has played emotionally troubled mothers in commercially successful dramas like Fiza (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003).

Jaya Bachchan is an Indian actress and alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India. She started her acting career at the age of 15 in Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film, Mahanagar (1963). She then appeared in two more Bengali films and joined FTII Pune where she graduated with a gold medal. Her breakthrough came with Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Guddi (1971), which established her as a girl-next-door actress. She continued to play middle-class roles in several films of directors such as Gulzar, Basu Chatterjee, and Mukherjee, including Uphaar (1971), Piya Ka Ghar (1972), Parichay (1972), Koshish (1972), and Bawarchi (1972). She also acted alongside Amitabh Bachchan in several hit films, such as Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975), Mili (1975), and Sholay (1975).

After her daughter’s birth, she retired from films except for Yash Chopra’s Silsila (1981), which she starred in opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She wrote the story for Shahenshah (1988) and returned to acting in 1998 with Govind Nihalani’s Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa. Jaya won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performances in Fiza (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001), and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). She acted with her son Abhishek Bachchan in Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007) and Drona (2008). She also appeared in the Bangladeshi film Meherjaan (2011).
