Ratan Tata, born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), during the British Raj, is the son of Naval Tata, who was born in Surat. Ratan’s biological maternal grandmother was Hirabai Tata, the wife of the founder of the Tata business, Jamsetji Tata. Ratan’s biological grandfather, Hormusji Tata, was a member of the larger Tata family, so Ratan was born a Tata. His parents, Naval and Sonoo, divorced when he was 10, and he was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, the widow of Sir Ratanji Tata, who legally adopted him through the J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage. Ratan was raised by his half-brother, Noel Tata, from Naval Tata’s second marriage to Simone Tata. Ratan’s first language is Gujarati.
Tata is a well-known philanthropist in India, who is involved in education, medicine, and rural development. He supported the Faculty of Engineering at the University of New South Wales in developing a technology called capacitive deionization, which helps provide better water to underserved communities.
