Joseph Vijay, popularly known as Vijay, was born on June 22, 1974, in Chennai, India. He is a Roman Catholic and was baptized in a church in Chennai. His mother, Shoba, is a carnatic and backing singer, and his father, S.A. Chandrasekhar, is a Tamil film director. Vijay had a younger sister, Vidhya, who passed away when she was two years old, which had a profound impact on him.

He completed his schooling at Balalok Matriculation High School in Virugambakkam after attending Fathima Matriculation High School in Kodambakkam. Later, he went to Loyola College to study visual communication. Vijay married Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu British woman, on August 25, 1999, and they have two children: Jason Sanjay, born in London in 2000, and Divya Shasha, born in Chennai in 2005.

Vijay made his acting debut at the age of ten in the 1984 film Vetri and continued to act as a child artist in several movies until he played the lead role in Naalaiya Theerpu in 1992, which was directed by his father.
